| LeBASSE PROJECTS / LOS ANGELES OCTOBER 8 - NOVEMBER 5, 2011 |
|
'The Future Is Not What It Used To Be' A group exhibition curated by Mike Stilkey LeBasse Projects, Culver City October 8th - November 5th 2011 Artist reception: Saturday, October 8th, 6-9pm Los Angeles, CA - LeBasse Projects is proud to announce, 'The Future Is Not What It Used To Be' a group exhibition curated by Mike Stilkey. Stilkey is one of the represented artists at LeBasse Projects and this exhibition is his first curatorial effort. The title of the show was inspired by a quote from the French poet Paul Valery, "The trouble with our times is that the future is not what it used to be." This idea resonated with Stilkey because the future seems to show as much promise as when we were young. Stilkey suggests: "Our vision of the future is that society will evolve and progress and our situation will improve. As you get older you realize that these things often do not turn out the way you expected. I think this is especially relevant at this time, with global concerns and anxiety around climate change, economic and financial crises, environmental destruction, etc. When I was a kid, I thought that in 30 years I'd be flying around in a Jetson's car, not worrying about global warming and widespread extinction of species." Artists invited to participate include: Kelsey Brookes, Brian Dettmer, Katrin Fridriks, Jim Houser, Dave Kinsey, Ryan McLennan, Cleon Peterson, Dena Schuckit, Aaron Smith, Tara Tucker, Mario Wagner and Mike Stilkey. Artists were selected because of the nature of their work and how it resonated with Stilkey's own vision of the future. While the theme of the show is based on the poetic title, Stilkey has left artists open to interpreting the ideas entirely at their own direction. Click on the image to have a closer look. |

| ABSOLUT VODKA / ABSOLUT WAGNER |
|
In collaboration with a new generation of artists, ABSOLUT VODKA is introducing ABSOLUT BLANK, a global creative movement, in which ABSOLUT appears as a catalyst for contemporary leading-edge creativity.
The 18 artists participating in ABSOLUT BLANK represent a variety of creative disciplines from across the globe; from drawing, painting and sculpting to film making and digital art. Among the artworks are UVA's high intensity, bright and striking light installations, Mario Wagner's attention-grabbing cut-out imagery, the colourful and playful graphic design of Aesthetic Apparatus, the bold illustrations of Dave Kinsey and the detailed work of Good Wives and Warriors. ABSOLUT has always challenged conventions through creative collaborations with artists such as Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Damien Hirst, and more recently Ellen von Unwerth and Spike Jonze. ABSOLUT BLANK is a daring new chapter for ABSOLUT. “In ABSOLUT BLANK, ABSOLUT has boldly made its iconic bottle into a blank canvas to inspire artists throughout the world to collaborate and fill it with creativity. We brought together creative collaborators from a variety of disciplines and watched the journey from pure white canvas to exceptional pieces of art. The result depicts how artists and creativity are inspired through ABSOLUT,” says Mark Hamilton, Global Marketing Director at The Absolut Company. | LAZARIDES GALLERY / NEWCASTLE (UK) APRIL 22 - MAY 21, 2011 |
|
Outsiders Newcastle, the North-East gallery of curator-director Steve Lazarides, presents 'Cluster 10', the debut solo UK exhibition by San Francisco-based artist Mario Wagner. Wagners colourful and arresting style has been used to great effect in premium style titles like Esquire and Vanity Fair. His canvasses depict a contrasting mythos: free-thinking and colourful retro-futurist scenes are blighted by contemporary intruders, well-tailored men seemingly up to no good, made all the more intimidating and inhuman by their balaclavas. The paintings collage backgrounds harken back to the 50s and 60s when science fact raced to keep up with science fiction. It was an era when technology was embraced unthinkingly, and man was only a short step from realising a total leisure culture or his destiny amongst the stars, depending on his adventurousness of spirit. The pictures protagonists however pursue a very different agenda. Slick moral relativists from a more recent age, they ride out with sinister intent, set traps, stew plots, and bury their dead clandestinely in compelling micro-narratives that trigger the less welcome elements of our imagination. Tomorrows world has not been realised, nor was it ever likely to be. A lack of personal jet packs is the least of our concerns. Fear and excitement lustfully combine as the viewer is propelled into Wagners opulent but often threatening dreamscapes. Who and what do we sympathise with more - the giddily assured optimism represented in Wagners canvasses by post-war science fiction, or the shrewd self-preserving realism of the figures who slink through it? If you could forgive the Man from UNCLE for fiddling his expenses, or likewise feel that the future needs guardians fast, then 'Cluster 10' will push your buttons. | SKODA FABIA MONTE CARLO |
|
My recent work for the new SKODA FABIA Monte Carlo takes one through treacherous mountains terrain. At a brake neck speed the car races with the taste of triumph calling us towards the finish line in Monte Carlo. In Celebration of 100 years of Rallye Monte Carlo, Skoda wanted to premiere the new Fabia Monte Carlo with some interesting posters for dealerships, making an impression that there is another side to Monte Carlo that most people do not think of. It is more dangerous, more dark, more rough. The opposite of what you would expect when you think of posh, pristine, wealthy Monte Carlo. And that other side was the inspiration for the new Fabia Monte Carlo Edition. Skoda Fabia Monte Carlo website Click on the image to have a closer look. |

I'm featured in the amazing book "Cutting Edges - Contemporary Collage" by the Gestalten Verlag from Berlin, Germany. Cutting Edges documents the new heyday of collage in current art and visual culture. Todays artists, illustrators, and designers are increasingly drawn to this artistic technique by the challenges of seamlessly melding traditional craftsmanship with skilled computer montage. They are not only composing a wide variety of visual elements, but are also deliberately omitting, deleting, and destroying them. This book is an inspiring collection of these unique examples of contemporary collage. Order your Issue here. Click on the image to have a closer look. |

| "OBSERVED BY CLOUDS" GALLERY HEIST / SAN FRANCISCO (USA) SEPTEMBER 4 - SEPTEMBER 25, 2010 |
|
Gallery Heist is pleased to announce "Observed by Clouds", an exhibition of new work by Mario Wagner. This event is highly anticipated as it marks the artist’s first solo show in San Francisco since relocating here from Germany this year. Utilizing imagery from the 1950s and 60s, Wagner’s pieces convey a sense of vintage futurism in beautifully anachronistic micro-narratives that describe one visual point in some larger, unknown story. Executed through a stream-of-consciousness based process: spontaneous, free flowing and of the moment, "Observed by Clouds" will be expressed through the techniques of painting, mixed media, collage, and installation and will present more than a dozen new artworks. An opening reception will be held at Gallery Heist on Saturday, September 4, 2010 from 7-11pm and the exhibition will run from September 4 - September 25, 2010. Imbued with a sense of cinematic intrigue and sci-fi fantasy that speaks to the era from which he draws reference, Wagner’s pieces depict a time when futuristic fascination was widespread, space travel was imminent, and the possibilities of technology were limitless. "Observed by Clouds" will present a collection of work exploring some of the darker and more illusive narratives that have been steadily evolving in Wagner’s artistic oeuvre. As Wagner puts it, these new works "feel like the next step in a line." Dreamlike scenarios of morose pallbearers assembled in funeral formation, masked marauders on horseback full of hidden agendas, and watchful strangers with questionable intentions lurking in shadows point to mysteries that border on the eerie, begging at the viewer’s imagination and inviting him to contemplate the origins of the story’s beginning and its probable end. | CINDERS GALLERY / NEW YORK (USA) OCTOBER 16 - NOVEMBER 18, 2009 |

CUTTERS: An Exhibition of International Collage Cutters showcases a variety of contemporary collage from North America and Europe. The selected artists range from young google-image searchers to collage veterans with roots in the 70s punk scene. Each one has a unique vision and exciting visual vocabulary that includes collections of images sorted and stacked, layered and glued, cut to pieces and ripped apart. In our current age of vast visual stimuli, images and information are swirling all around us at a faster pace than ever before. We process what we can, latch on to fragments, and quickly move on. As we get used to everything being remixed, edited, mashed up and shuffled around, these collage artists freeze that frenzy and bring you in for a closer look at the hand at work. With over 40 artists contributing close to 150 works of various sizes, shapes, and colors, the gallery will be transformed into one giant assemblage, glue stains and all. Opening Reception is Friday, October 16, 7-10pm Cinders Gallery 103 Havemeyer St. Brooklyn New York 11211 Opening hours: Wed-Sun 1-7pm www.cindersgallery.com The show is curated by James Gallagher Other participating artists are Andreas Banderas (Norway), Michael Bartalos (USA), Melinda Beck (USA), Brian Belott (USA), Jorge Chamorro/ La Cascara Amarga (Spain), Brian Chippendale (USA), Ophelia Chong (USA), Saiman Chow (USA), Cless (Spain), Rebecca Conroy (USA), Cristiana Couceiro (Portugal), Valero Doval (UK), Andy Ducett (USA), Carl Dunn (USA), Lisa Eisenbrey (USA), Elroy (Germany), James Gallagher (USA), Jason Glasser (France), Hort (Germany), Jordin Isip (USA), Lidy Jacobs (Netherlands), Sophie Kern (UK), Eva Lake (USA), Vanessa Lamounier (Netherlands), Matt Li[pps (USA), Sean Mackaoui (Spain), Max-o-matic (Spain), Taylor McKimens (USA), Cameron Windish Michel (USA), Agnes Montgomery (USA), Justin Mortimer (UK), Pedro Oliveira (Brazil), Julien Pacaud (France), David Plunkert (USA), Kareem Rizk (Austrailia), Matthew Rose (France), Brion Nuda Rosch (USA), Joe Ryyckebosch (USA), Katherine Streeter (USA), Mario Wagner (Germany), Oliver Wiegner (Germany), Johanna Wilhelm (Germany), Jessica Williams (USA), Bill Zindel (USA) |

| EXHIBITION |
| CERASOLI GALLERY / LOS ANGELES (USA) 14. JUNE - 05. JULY 2008 |
| Press Release Cerasoli Gallery is pleased to present Mario Wagner 'Lost Art Of Murder' Solo Exhibition in Gallery One, and Marco Cibola 'A New Division' Solo Exhibition in Gallery Two, at the Cerasoli Gallery (8633-B Washington Blvd in Culver City). Opens Saturday June 14, 2008, and remains on view through July 5, 2008. German artist and illustrator Mario Wagner's large scale papercollage and acrylic on canvas works derive from familiar Modernist techniques - Dadaist collage and photomontage. Despite their 'analog' processes, utilizing old magazines, scissor, glue and acrylic, Wagner's unique, inchoate assemblages are erratic and surprising. Clustered bodies float within vintage settings split by lightning bolts. Salaciously grinning mouths hint at scandal and subplot as eyeless faces drip retro glamour. Wagner's work has been shown in numerous international exhibitions and will be at the Feinkunst Kröger Gallery in Hamburg, Germany, in June, 2008. His illustrations and artworks have been commissioned by Playboy, Vanity Fair, Esquire, and The New York Times Magazine. About the gallery For the last four years, the space at 8633-b Washington Boulevard in Culver City, California regularly exhibited the most outstanding of emerging urban artists. In 2008, this and former gallery The Lab 101 became the new home to Cerasoli Gallery, still under the direction of owner Freddi Cerasoli. Under its new identity, Cerasoli Gallery represents a select group of talented, up-and-coming and established, local and international artists whose common thread is creating thoughtful, imaginative, contemporary art. |
